Why We Don’t Take Insurance

At Emotional Alchemy Healing @ TJ Walsh Counseling, we’ve chosen not to work directly with insurance companies. That choice isn’t about being exclusive or complicated — it’s about protecting the heart of the work we do together.

Therapy, at its best, is personal, creative, and deeply human. When insurance gets involved, things can start to feel clinical and boxed in. Companies often require a mental-health diagnosis to cover sessions, which means your private story turns into a code in a system. They can also request notes, set limits, or dictate what kind of therapy “counts.”

That’s not how we do things here.

When you pay privately, the work stays between us. We can focus on your full story…not just your symptoms. You get to decide what healing looks like, how fast we move, and where we spend our time. It’s slower, steadier, and more honest.

Your story doesn’t belong in a billing portal. It belongs in a space where it can breathe.

Using Out-of-Network Benefits

Even though we don’t bill insurance directly, many of our clients are able to get partial reimbursement through their out-of-network benefits. We’ll happily give you a superbill (basically a detailed receipt) that you can submit to your insurance company.

If you’d like to see what your plan might cover, call the number on your insurance card and ask:

  1. Do I have out-of-network benefits for outpatient mental health counseling?

  2. What percentage of the session fee is reimbursed?

  3. What is my deductible, and how much of it has been met?

  4. How do I submit a superbill for reimbursement?

Plans vary, but many clients get a portion of their session cost back once their deductible is met.

Clear Rates, No Surprises

We believe in transparency from the start. Our rates are clearly listed when you schedule, and there are no hidden fees or unexpected charges. You always know what you’re investing in.

Working privately means your time and energy go directly toward your healing — not toward paperwork or approval codes. It keeps therapy simple, confidential, and rooted in trust.

Therapy is a real investment — in your clarity, your peace, your relationships, and your future. We honor that by offering care that’s grounded in respect and choice.
